There are lots of different ways to heat a home. Some are more efficient or cost-effective than others. This post explores some of the different energy sources and the benefits and drawbacks of each one.
1.Biomass
Biomass heating uses organic materials such as wood pellets, wood chips or logs. It can include old-fashioned fireplaces and more modern biomass boilers. The modern method is known to produce significant heat, while having a much lower carbon footprint than fossil fuel heating. Automated pellet systems tend to be more convenient than manual systems and can be retrofitted into existing central heating systems.
Pros: It’s a sustainable energy source and it emits much less carbon emissions than fossil fuel systems.
Cons: Biomass heating systems often require regular maintenance and ash removal.
2. Oil
Oil heaters feed oil into a furnace where it is burned to provide heat. These heating systems are popular in rural areas in homes that aren’t connected to the gas grid. Oil has to be purchased and these systems have to be topped up manually.
Pros: Oil furnaces are incredibly efficient and can provide good heat output while sometimes lasting up to 30 years before needing to be replaced.
Cons: Burning oil creates a lot of carbon emissions and the price of oil can fluctuate a lot.
3. Gas
Many homes across the UK use gas heating. Most people have gas supplied to their home via pipelines, but you can also buy bottled gas for off-grid gas heating. Gas is heavily relied on for its efficiency and rapid heat up times, but has environmental drawbacks which are making it less popular.
Pros: Gas heating systems produce heat fast and are often cheaper to run than oil or electric heating systems.
Cons: Although not as environmentally unfriendly as oil, gas heating does use fossil fuels and create emissions.
4. Mains electricity
Traditional electric heating can be used to power radiators, HVAC units or underfloor heating and uses power from the mains. Installing electric heating systems is often much cheaper and much more straightforward than installing gas systems, and these systems require a lot less maintenance.
Pros: Heating systems running off mains electricity are often cheap to install and maintain, plus they don’t create on-site emissions like gas (although power stations themselves may burn fossil fuels).
Cons: Electric heating can cost more than gas heating, plus mains systems are vulnerable to power outages.
5. Solar electricity
Instead of using mains power, solar electric hearing systems use power generated from the sun using solar panels. This power is not only sustainable, but free – saving you huge amounts of money on your electricity bills. Of course, solar systems do cost quite a lot of money to install, so it’s very much an investment.
Pros: Solar heating comes from a guaranteed sustainable source making it a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, plus it’s a free energy source that isn’t affected by power grid issues.
Cons: Installing solar panels is expensive and efficiency is dependent on how clear the sky is and daylight hours.
6. Air source heat
A type of electric heating that can be powered by mains or solar, air source heat differs in that it uses pumps to extract heat from the air. Air source heat pumps tend to be more cost-effective than regular electric systems and are effective in moderate climates where they can be used to produce heating and cooling.
Pros: Air source heat pumps use more energy from the environment than they consume, making them cheaper to run and greener than traditional electric heating systems.
Cons: Initial setup can be expensive and heating may not be as efficient in very cold temperatures.
7. Ground source heat
Ground heat source pumps instead extract heat from the ground. They involve installing a system of pipes under your home to absorb geothermal heat. It’s an efficient form of heating that can be used to power underfloor heating or radiators, but can be complex to install.
Pros: Ground source heat pumps can often provide more stable and efficient heat throughout the year than air source heat pumps, plus they’re very sustainable.
Cons: Installation of these systems can be complex and expensive.
Choosing the right heating system
It’s important to weigh up the pros and cons of each heating system and choose one that is best suited to your budget, needs and values. For low environmental impact, solutions like biomass, solar and heat pumps are the best options. For efficiency and reliability, choose gas or oil. Make sure to consider setup costs and think about how these compare to running costs.
