Whether you have a lot of land to work with or just a little, having animals is very much a central aspect to this lifestyle, and one that you are going to want to make sure you are doing right. In particular, that will generally mean that you need to consider the various kinds of animals you might possibly have. Some of these are obvious, and you might already have them. Donkeys
Although not exactly unheard of, donkeys are still not the most common farmyard animal around. Yet there is a lot that they can provide, and they are also relatively easy and straightforward to look after. At most farms, they are much more likely to be workers than traditional farmyard animals, and you won’t be keeping them for their meat or any other produce. But as livestock guards and protectors of your land in general, you will find them quite useful to have around.
Alpacas
Increasingly, we are seeing more and more alpacas and llamas in this part of the world, but you are still going to struggle to call them regular sights. If you are thinking of expanding out the kind of animals you keep, then you might want to look to alpacas. In particular, they can offer a unique and beautiful type of fur, and are known to be great company, being animals that you can generally develop a real relationship and friendship with. Prawn
You might never have thought of raising prawns in your farm, but they are something that you can have anywhere in the world, and they provide a delicious source of food that you might find particularly lucrative. They are, in truth, real moneymakers, and if you are a farmer who is inland you can keep these little guys in an aquarium or a pond easily enough. If you want to be able to offer something delicious to your local community and receive some pretty good dividends in return, prawns are worth considering.
Elk
The elk is one of the larger species of the deer family, and to many people it is a particularly imposing sight. It is actually quite common to see elk in North America, but gradually they are being introduced to many other parts of the world too. If you keep a farm, having elk can provide revenue through their antlers, velvet production, and of course, through using them for meat. However you use them, they are worth thinking about, and a kind of animal that you can get a lot out of if you try.
