Ceilings aren’t as high, there are fewer cabinets to store items and the units are the furthest thing from an open-plan concept. If you live in a home with a small bedroom, living room, bathroom, or kitchen, follow these few steps on how you can make that small room look a lot bigger.
#1 Use Very Light or Very Dark colors
Medium shade paint and colors can make a room appear much smaller. Consider bright whites and deep dark colors to create a contrasting effect. This creates depth and the illusion of a larger space. Luckily white matches with any color that you find attractive.
#2 Purchase Multifunctional Furniture
Multifunctional furniture is a broad category of products that include wall beds, transforming tables, compact seating, or storage solutions. In a small room, there is no need to have a storage table and a coffee table. Purchase a table that allows you the opportunity to do both. When referring to the bedroom, buy a bed with built-in cupboards to pack away bedding or clothes. If everything you use can be tucked into a designated spot, you eliminate clutter and it gives the appearance of space.
#3 Use Larger Decorations
It is wiser to buy a few larger decoration items than many small decorations. A lot of small things tend to a bit much and make a room look overwhelmed and small. Use the triangle rule and symmetry when styling the coffee table, nightstands, dresser tops, and dining tables. The decorative triangle is when you place three items with the goal of them visually connecting. Once everything is in order, you should be able to draw a line between the pieces and create a triangle.

Use a rug to define spaces. Area rugs help the room to feel finished and pulled together. Few things look better than putting a modern and stylish carpet in a room. Having a rug in a small room creates the illusion of more extensive square footage. You will not only have the feel of a much bigger space but also have your feet warm and snuggly!

Before purchasing a beautiful piece of art, make sure you have enough space on the wall for wall decor. If your small room has a wall with no wall decoration, opt for one large piece of art instead of a gallery wall full of small pictures. You do not want your room to look overcrowded; it is okay to leave some walls blank.
#6 Declutter
The whole point of making a small room look bigger is not having unnecessary items – try making a habit of decluttering your home every six months. Even large rooms with clutter feel too small, so if there are unnecessary items in your home and you do not want to give them away, hire a storage unit and have some more space for yourself.
