With space at such a premium, those of us who have spare rooms are very lucky indeed, but you know what? So many of us take our good look for granted and do very little with the spare room beyond using it as a place to store all of the clutter we’ve accumulated or to house the gym equipment we bought with good intentions but just never used. This is such a waste, and it’s time to change that by actually doing something fun, useful and valuable with your spare room…
1. The Reading Nook of Dreams
If you are the kind of person who loves to settle down with a good book, then what could be more magical than having your very own reading nook where you can retreat from the rest of the family, get some peace and quiet, and just sink into a good book?
All you need is a cosy armchair, a cosy rug, a decent lamp, and a few bookshelves (maybe with a few plants dotted around to bring extra calm), and you have a great space that you can actually use for something you love!
2. A Home Gym That Doesn’t Judge You
Commercial gyms aren’t for everyone. They’re expensive, noisy, and you often feel self-conscious running on the treadmill slowly while the person next to you speeds alone like Usain Bolt, right? Well, that’s where the home gym comes in. One you will actually use.
Fill the spare room with weights or varying sizes, a yoga mat, a full-length mirror and maybe a walking pad or treadmill. Make it your healthy place, and you might actually use it once you’ve cleared out all the clutter.
3. The Dressing Room to End All Dressing Rooms
Want to go full luxury? You can’t get more luxe than having your very own dressing room in your very own home, right? And all it takes for you to turn your spare room into a decadent palace to dress is a decent set of luxury-walk-in wardrobes, a dressing table complete with a lighted mirror, and maybe some scented drawer and wardrobe sheets/balls, so everything smells as divine as it looks.
4. Creative Studio: Paint, Knit, Sew, Make Magic
You can’t be expected to unlock your inner creative genius at the kitchen table while dodging crumbs and cold coffee rings. Spare room = studio time.
Whether you’re into painting, crafting, writing, sewing, pottery, or designing elaborate birthday cards only your nan appreciates, this is your artistic kingdom. Bonus points for hanging fairy lights and occasionally referring to yourself as “an artiste”.
5. Guest Bedroom… But Make It Boutique
If you are the kind of family that loves to entertain, then there really is no better way to use the spare room than to transform it into a stunning guest bedroom, but if you’re going to do that, make it boutique, alright?
How? Soft bedding, dimmable lights, a mini-shelf of books, fluffy towels, little slippers (yes, really) and maybe even a tiny basket with snacks. Your guests might never leave, so choose wisely who gets an invite.
