Planning a home renovation is one of those things that can be equal parts exciting, stressful and terrifying. It’s exciting because you’re looking forward to having an amazing new space to spend time in, stressful because there are lots of plans and logistics behind the process, and terrifying because it’s expensive and it has so much potential to go wrong, right?
Well, the good news is, you can make it a bit less terrifying, and much less stressful by making sure that you do everything right so that it almost cannot possibly go wrong. Here’s how to do that:
Start With a Plan (a Real One, Not a Fantasy Sketch)
A renovation that begins with “Let’s just knock this wall down and see what happens” is a renovation destined for tears. Before anything gets demolished, sit down and map out exactly what you want, how much you’re willing to spend, and which parts are absolute must-haves versus “would be nice if the universe is kind.” A clear plan isn’t just for you – it also keeps your builders on the same page and prevents any “Oh, you wanted that wall painted?” moments later.
Choose the Right Builders, Not Just the Cheapest
Speaking of professionals, picking your team is the moment that can make or break your renovation. Don’t be swayed by a suspiciously cheap quote or someone who says they can start tomorrow (a sign they might not actually have much work…). Ask for recommendations, check reviews, and meet your builders in person if you can. Do they listen? Do they explain things clearly? Do they look like the kind of people who won’t mind you appearing every 20 minutes with tea and nervous questions? That’s your team.
Expect Dust. So Much Dust.
You can cover your furniture, seal the doors, and pretend you’re fully prepared, but renovation dust is sneaky. It will get everywhere. Including places you didn’t know existed. Accepting this early on, rather than shouting “HOW?!” at yet another dusty surface, will, for sure, save you a lot of stress. Temporary chaos is part of the journey; just keep reminding yourself that your beautiful new room is hiding underneath the mess.

Even the most organised renovation can throw up a few unexpected “fun” discoveries: outdated wiring, rotting floorboards, pipes that go nowhere yet somehow matter… So, it’s a good idea to build a contingency fund of at least 10–15% into your budget. That way, when something weird inevitably shows up, you’ll be annoyed but not devastated.

Regular check-ins with your builders keep everyone aligned and prevent misunderstandings. So, never be afraid to ask questions, no matter how basic they sound. It’s far better to clarify early than realise later that someone has installed a door that opens into a wall.
Know When To Step Back
There will be moments when your house looks worse than when you started. This is normal. Avoid hovering, fretting, or spiralling into doom. Go for a walk, visit a friend, or treat yourself to a coffee and remind yourself: progress often looks like chaos before it looks like improvement.
