Winter is fast approaching, and when it officially hits, it can be cold, very cold. Being in a cold home is not pleasant, it can cause you to be irritable, unhappy and ill. So instead of feeling those ways, you should get your home ready for the winter months as far in advance as possible.
Getting your home ready for the winter months is easily done, you just have to be organised. You should be checking your windows and doors for any damage and drafts that could potentially get through. Make sure you test your radiators, to ensure they are working properly and to save yourself money, you could purchase a large heater, for quick warming of rooms. Other things you should get prepared for include buying blankers, and a winter duvet and clearing your gutters (this could cause issues when winter hits).
Prepare yourself and start planning now; before you know it, winter will be here. Below we have put together our guide on six ways to get your home ready for the winter months.
Check your windows and doors
You should be checking your windows and doors for damage throughout the year, however, it’s especially important before winter hits. You want to check for any cracks and damage to the glass that could cause breakage or for the cold wind to leak through. If you haven’t had your windows changed in a long time, or know they are not double-glazed, it may be worth getting them replaced. Double or triple glazing is more secure and extremely good at keeping the sound in, as well as heat. This can be expensive, so make sure you get multiple quotes if you go down this route.
Test your radiators
Another task you should be doing regularly during the year, but especially as winter approaches is testing your radiators. If they haven’t been used in a long time, this can cause the system to block, meaning you will need to flush them out. Bleeding your radiators may be required as over the year, air can get trapped in the system, causing them to heat up slower. If you are unsure of how to bleed your raiders, YouTube has many tutorial videos that you can follow.
Clearing out your guttering
You may be thinking, why do I need to clear out my guttering? There are several reasons why you should be doing it. If your guttering hasn’t been cleared out for a long time, this can cause blockages, which will lead to leaks occurring and potentially mould or damp growing in your home. Blockages are more common in the winter months as this is when the wind and rain can blow debris into it and the rain, overflowing it. Cleaning it out yourself will save you money in the long run as if you don’t you may require a professional to come in and fix any larger issues from a blockage.
Get your winter duvet out
Do you currently have a summer duvet on, if so, then now might be the time to think about getting your winter one out. There is nothing better than sinking into a freshly made bed, with your cosy winter duvet there to wrap around you. If you haven’t got a winter duvet, there are plenty of places that sell them, every bed shop for that matter. Have a quick look online and you’ll find plenty, ready for next-day delivery.
Prepare your blankets
Chances are your blankets are tidied away during the summer months. If this is the case, now is the time to get them out, put them through the wash and fold them, ready to relax into when it’s cold. Blankets are cosy and they will save on your heating bill. They are also very affordable and can be used to decorate your living room or bedroom. In your living room you can use a blanket to lay over your sofa, whereas, in your bedroom, you can accessorise your bed with one. The price of a new blanket ranges from cheap, and affordable to very expensive. It depends on the size, materials used, brand and other factors.

Buy a large heater
In the summer months, we use fans and air conditioning units. In the winter months, you can switch to heaters. As winter approaches, then it’s the best time to buy a heater as the pricing is better than when we are officially in winter. If you want to get a bargain for the future years, heaters are at their cheapest when summer is approaching, as this is when you no longer require one. The same theory is applied to fans. When winter approaches, this is when fans drop to their lowest prices as not many people are buying them any more.
As the temperature gets colder, the more prepared for winter you are going to need to be. When it’s really cold, this is when you want to ensure your heating is working and that you have a heater and blankets to wrap up into. If you know you need to buy anything, try and buy well before winter starts as this is when the best prices are available (we mentioned it above with fans).
Final Thoughts
Always keep an eye on the weather forecast as this will give you a good indication of when the weather is going to be at its best and worst. By being aware of bad spells, you can put a few extra plans in place to ensure you are warm and that the house is protected from heavy rain and winds. There may be a few home improvements that you need to apply.
